Desiree McCabe (Dez)
Desiree McCabe is a Native American
Artist of the Southwest. She is Navajo and Taos Pueblo from Farmington, New Mexico the Four Corners region. Of her many crafts which include pottery, jewelry, beading and painting. Her pottery is that with which she spends the most time. The designs carved in her pots come from traditional patterns passed down from generations.
She spent divided between time on the Navajo Reservation and the Taos Pueblo.
Every piece which is hand crafted, painted and etched, has an individual meaning.
Making Pottery is a long and time consuming art. Pottery is clay and comes in two different colors red and white. Special paints are used to color and design the pot. Staining is another technique which gives the red pottery a Burnt wood Effect, the white pottery is a Black on White Effect. The pottery is fired at extreme temperatures and can be a dangerous process so, much care is taken when she makes horsehair pottery. While making pottery the clay is very fragile it can crack or crumble. After the firing the pottery hardens but, still needs to be handled very gently.
